Welcome to the New York Legal Ethics Reporter

On behalf of Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz PC and the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, we introduce the New York Legal Ethics Reporter (NYLER). We are honored to edit this publication to assist lawyers in New York State and beyond by providing detailed analyses and practical tips on professional responsibility issues and developments.

For decades we have valued the close connection among the lawyers of the professional responsibility community — a community that has always been willing to share and help one another. A leading example of this was the New York Professional Responsibility Report, published monthly by Lazar Emanuel. For more than a decade, Mr. Emanuel, our colleague Professor Roy Simon and dozens of others provided thoughtful content to NYPRR, educating and guiding scores of New York lawyers. In that spirit, we have started NYLER, a new e-publication dedicated to continuing Mr. Emanuel’s tradition of providing timely and interesting articles on legal ethics.

Our goals for NYLER are very simple. We hope to present useful, interesting articles to all sectors of the legal community, from large firm lawyers to solo practitioners, from full-time legal ethics practitioners to those with only a passing interest in the topic. We hope to keep our articles short and focused, while providing a handy resource for legal research. We want our publication to serve as a source for dialogue and debate within the legal community about controversial ethics issues. Most of all, we want to have fun providing information to you about a subject we love — and we want our readers to have fun too.

We appreciate the inspiration of Mr. Emanuel and thank his family for working with us in continuing the educational endeavor. Thanks to the Emanuel family, the NYLER website includes the past issues of the New York Professional Responsibility Report.

Our articles will appear here on this website — at no cost — for anyone who would like to read them. We will also send the articles in an email newsletter format to those who request them (just put your email address into the “Subscribe for Updates” box on the homepage!). If you know others who would like to receive the newsletter, please do spread the word.

In addition, we are pleased to report that the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board has accredited NYLER to provide 0.5 CLE credits in Ethics and Professionalism to experienced attorneys who score 80% or higher on our self-assessment examinations (which are based on the articles we publish). The processing fee for each 0.5 credit will be $25. (Financial aid is available for attorneys who are unable to purchase a test due to cost considerations. The NYLER financial aid policy appears on the purchase page.)

We are excited to produce this publication and are eager to hear from you. We welcome your feedback and suggestions.
